romantic comedy

The Philadelphia Story (1940) - 3/5

This movie is a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, neither asking nor offering surprise. The main trio of actors is outstanding and worth the price of admission alone, and makes long strides to compensate for the lack of anything else in this film.

Closest comparison: It’s like The Parent Trap by way of Desk Set.

Setting: RomCom
Plot: RomCom
Tone: RomCom

Café Society - 2/5

This this is a depressing tragedy of human moral weakness. It’s has great sets and costuming, but its main actors are miscast in their roles and struggle to melt into them. The story starts out witty and smart, but after the tragic drama begins finds itself unable to find purpose for its own existence. If you’re in the mood for a flashy dramedy with lots of pointless melodrama that never resolves then this is the film for you.

Closest comparison: It’s like Marriage Story by way of The Great Gadsby.

Setting: Romance
Plot: Tragedy
Tone: Comedy

Warm Bodies (2013) - 3/5

This is a hilarious take on both the zombie and rom com genres, but instead of satirizing the genres themselves it makes a movie solidly in each genre, which itself provides the underlying satirical humor. Beyond that, though, the film is hilarious and has lots of heart to boot. Sure there are zombies eating brains, but it provides the most interesting interpretation for it that I’ve seen, even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense outside the context of the narrative. It’s a solid film, highly recommended for fans of zombie movies and comedies.

Closest comparison: It’s like Romeo and Juliet by way of Dawn of the Dead.

Setting: Zombies
Plot: Romantic Comedy
Tone: Action Comedy
